Our Food Philosophy

Our family “diet” began three years ago after the birth of my youngest daughter.  Hollywood and I knew that we were done having children and I really wanted to get that baby weight off.

Somehow, while roaming the endless reaches of the interwebs, I came across the documentary “Fat Head”. To sum it up, a man loses weight while eating Mickey D’s for a month. The premise is also that we have been “fed a load of bologna” by those who endorse the Standard American Diet. There’s more but you can check out the “Fat Head” blog yourself for more info. This sparked a research binge. After watching “Sugar: The Bitter Truth” and reading various blogs, including Mark’s Daily Apple, we decided to go Paleo.

That lasted for several months and I felt great. The downside? I felt too restricted. Hollywood could live off of meat and veggies for the rest of his life, but that’s not for me. We slowly incorporated rice, beans, peanut butter, and more fruit back into our diet.

Today we have come to a good balance in how we choose to eat.  Most of what we do eat we make at home. We avoid processed foods, gluten, and added sugar if at all possible; and even that is just a guide.  We will never rule anything out, restriction always seems to backfire. For the most part we choose the foods that keep us healthy and choosing seems easier this way.

This picture has nothing to do with what I just said.  I just like it.
